Personality:

Once an unmotivated student with little interest in anything beyond the University's walls, Ponder has since graduated (With a great deal of help from his single-question exam paper) and become the youngest member of the UU faculty, evolving into a driven, inquisitive wizard with an interest in the more scientific branches of magic. Treated as the odd-jobs wizard, most vacated positions fall to him-- to the point where he now holds enough to have twelve votes on the University council. He possesses in great quantities the decidedly unwizardly qualities of motivation and ambition, perhaps best displayed in his studies in the High Energy Magic building and his creation of HEX. Though often frustrated by the naive, bickering behavior of the rest of the staff and their inattentiveness to his projects and the world in general, Ponder rarely speaks up, instead quietly bearing it-- because someone has to. This aside, he's quite content in his position at the University, devoted to his projects, and rather fond of the other wizards, selective deafness and all. Despite being saddled with any job that no one else wants to do, Ponder is one of the more approachable wizards-- generally willing, patient, good-natured, (if a bit gloomy now and again) and the one and only staff member who knows what’s going on at any given time.

Physical Appearance:

Ponder tends to stand out among the rest of the faculty, what with their white-bearded venerability and, er, gravity. Tall, thin, and generally a stark contrast to the typical wizard, Ponder is pale and a bit harried in manner. His glasses-- thick-lensed and absolutely essential, are always on his person. In another discrepancy from the rest of the wizards, his rumpled robes are often in a shade of gray, green, or another equally subdued color rather than the bright maroon most University wizards seem to prefer, unornamented save for a few ink-stained pockets and toggles.

History:

Ponder is a born and raised Ankh-Morporkian, and though he generally shares little about his history, it's known for a fact that he was raised by two of his aunts rather than his parents.
Various relatives are now and again mentioned, an arborist uncle among them. During his days as a student, Ponder's roommate was Victor Tuglebend (Perhaps better known as Victor Maraschino, the clicks star) who was-- albeit a bit accidentally-- instrumental in Ponder's graduation. After a mishap with his test paper and inkwell, he was permitted to use the absent Victor's, which, thanks to a bit of trouble with the staff, consisted of a single question-- "What is your name?"
This bit of fortune giving him the nudge he needed, Ponder went on to become highly motivated, eventually assuming his first faculty position (Head of Inadvisably Applied Magic) and proving himself indispensable to the rest of the staff.
